Institute-led walks on the story trail are at 1:00, 1:15, 3:00 & 3:15—Lindsay Barrett George will lead the 3 p.m. walk. Space is limited—register in advance for any guided StoryWalk® using the form at the bottom of this page.
Antietam Dairy ice cream truck will be selling scoops during the event.
Local authors, Cierra Aber, Sue James, and Dwight Karkan will be there, along with displays by area organizations and businesses—Alexander Hamilton Memorial Library, Blue Ridge Summit Library, Waynesboro YMCA, and Native Niche. In addition, the ButterBee Foundation is providing pollinator education.

Live entertainment from 1–2 p.m. features Nicholas DiSanto, One Man Band. Nick DiSanto is a musician and sculptor from central Pennsylvania who travels the world with his ukuleles and a multi-functional contrivance known as the DiSantomophone. He has brought his one-man parade to countless fairgrounds, retirement communities, street corners, vaudeville theaters, wedding halls and special events throughout the United States, Canada, and Japan. Nick’s enthusiastic performance features ageless American music that appeals to all ages.
At 2 p.m., Ms. George’s presentation shows the “AHA! moment” that led to some of her nature-based books. “The presentation is kind of a guessing game in disguise,” she said, “fun to share and with some fun “critter info” too. After sharing how ideas for books become a book, Ms. George invites families to join her for an engaging and interactive story-drawing activity.
Ms. George will also have art materials and some nature-based activities at her table during the event. In addition, autographed copies of a variety of Ms. George’s books will be available.
From a very young age, Ms. George found herself drawing—animals, friends, family and nature. With an active imagination, she created several wordless picture books, and later began to write children’s books (and illustrate them).
She has published 18 beautiful and delightful books, most featuring her beloved animals—all kinds of animals, from bunnies to beavers to Boomer the goose, and many more!
Ms. George has received several national awards and honors for her books, including from the National Science Teachers Association and the American Booksellers Association. She has also received recognition for her books and illustrations from Pennsylvania’s One Book, Every Young Child Project, the “Baker’s Dozen Best Book for Family Literacy” from the Pennsylvania Center for the Book, and in 1990 the Pennsylvania Library Association awarded Ms. George their Carolyn Field Award. In 2006 she received the Free Library of Philadelphia – Drexel University Children’s Literature Citation and in 2013, The Pennsylvania School Librarians presented Ms. George with the 2013 Outstanding Pennsylvania Author/Illustrator Award.
