Renfrew Rocks! Geology Program: “What Do Our Local Landscapes Tell Us About the Geology?”

April 6, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Free

Geologist Jeri Jones presents a quick-paced and informative program on fascinating aspects of the local underground world. “What Do Our Local Landscapes Tell Us About the Geology?” combines fun with education and continues the popular “Renfrew Rocks!” annual geology series.

The program will highlight the types of rocks found in the local region and their importance to a geologist, as well as mineral resources, geologic hazards and some of the new geologic discoveries in the area.

“Waynesboro is positioned within the Great Valley Section known for its limestone,” Jones said. “To the west are the world-famous Appalachian Mountains and to the east is South Mountain, which contains some of the oldest rocks in the entire state.”

“South Mountain is also the northern extension of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and North Carolina,” Jones said. “Participants will be amazed to discover what this area went through over the past one billion years.”

Audience questions are welcome, and door prizes will be awarded.Members of the Franklin County Rock and Mineral Club will have a display and some rock specimen giveaways during the program.

The program will also serve as an orientation for two geologic field trips on Sat., May 20 to Lansford, Pa., and on Sat., June 10 to Delta, Pa. The trips will explore area mining operations, quarries, and fossil hunting.
