Pollinators: Heroes in Your Backyard

Each spring, The Institute presents a series of related programs. For 2023, the lectures will be on Thursdays March 9, 16 and 23. Our unifying theme is the environment and habitat found in your own backyard, with a special focus on visitors like bees, birds, bugs, and critters of all sorts.

Admission is free and all are welcome.

This first program in a series of three is on March 9.

In this program, learn how to establish a pollinator-friendly garden or backyard. The presentation will introduce the pollinators found in our area, and why they are considered heroes. Collins will review why they need our help, and what individuals can do to support them, right in their own backyard. All experience levels can make a difference in how they maintain their yard. Collins explains that there are pollinator support methods for everyone. Her own photographs will illustrate the talk.

An avid gardener for 27 years, Collins has dedicated more than half an acre of her property to pollinator conservation. Part of the area is a Monarch Waystation and Certified Pollinator Habitat. For several years, she hand-raised and released over 1,000 Monarchs and Black Swallowtail butterflies.

“In addition to gardening, I love taking photos of what I see in the garden,” Collins said. “Pollinators are my passion, and I am constantly seeking opportunities to expand my knowledge and share it with others.”
